Get to know me

Graeme Whiting was born in 1944 and grew up on the Norfolk coast in a poor family of nine children. From an early age Graeme had a keen love of learning and also displayed an aptitude for sports and gymnastics. Following seven years in the British Army where he qualified and worked as a physical training instructor, Graeme began a career in children’s education, initially teaching physical education in public schools and later turning to the Steiner system. In 1991 with the help of his wife, Sarah, he created and founded The Acorn School, a small cutting-edge independent school in Nailsworth based on Steiner principles and Graeme’s own rich life experiences and values. After over thirty years of Acorn, with twenty-seven of those as headteacher, Graeme now teaches part-time and also provides tutoring to individual pupils and mentoring to other educational organisations, while Sarah is co-headteacher of the school. Graeme continues his lifelong passion for fishing and enjoys playing the guitar, writing, inventing and keeping fit. In 2022 he published his autobiography, From Little Acorns. Graeme and Sarah live in an old Cotswold farmhouse with children and grandchildren nearby.

WHAT IS A CHILD?

‘WHEN A TEACHER LOOKS AT A CHILD,

IT DOES NOT SEE THE CHILD.

THE CHILD IS NOT THE PHYSICAL FORM,

IT IS THE INNER BEING OF WHAT THE TEACHER SEES.

WITH SKILFUL HUMAN-CENTRIC,

HOLISTIC, THREEFOLD EDUCATION,

AVOIDANCE OF BEHAVIOURISTIC EDUCATION,

THE WISE TEACHER WILL SEEK TO FIND THE INNER BEING

THAT LIES DORMANT INSIDE THE CHILD,

â€˜POTENTIAL’ IS IN THE INNER BEING, NOT IN THE MUSCLE AND BLOOD, SKIN AND BONE!’
